# Copy, paste and duplicate

> Copy layers between frames, pages and files, paste them exactly where you want, and duplicate with a keystroke.

Copy and paste in uxdeck goes through your computer's clipboard, so you can copy layers in one file and paste them into another tab, another file or another window. Where a paste lands depends on what you have selected when you paste, which saves you dragging things into place afterwards.

## Copy, cut and paste

| Action | Keys |
|---|---|
| Copy | <kbd>⌘</kbd><kbd>C</kbd> |
| Cut | <kbd>⌘</kbd><kbd>X</kbd> |
| Paste | <kbd>⌘</kbd><kbd>V</kbd> |
| Paste over selection | <kbd>⇧</kbd><kbd>⌘</kbd><kbd>V</kbd> |
| Paste to replace | <kbd>⇧</kbd><kbd>⌘</kbd><kbd>R</kbd> |
| Duplicate | <kbd>⌘</kbd><kbd>D</kbd>, or <kbd>⌥</kbd>-drag |

All of these except Cut are also in the right-click menu on a layer.

## Where a paste lands

With <kbd>⌘</kbd><kbd>V</kbd>:

- **One frame selected:** into that frame, at the same spot it had in the frame you copied from. If that spot does not fit, it is centred.
- **Several frames selected:** into each of them. One copied layer goes into every frame; several copied layers are shared out in order, one per frame. This is how you drop the same header into ten screens in one go.
- **Another layer selected:** into the same parent, just above it in the layers list, at the spot it had where you copied it.
- **Nothing selected:** back where it was copied from, if that frame is in view; otherwise in the middle of your view.

The other ways to paste:

- **Paste here** (right-click on the canvas): at the pointer, into the frame under it.
- **Paste over selection** (<kbd>⇧</kbd><kbd>⌘</kbd><kbd>V</kbd>): on top of the selected layer, at its position, not inside it.
- **Paste to replace** (<kbd>⇧</kbd><kbd>⌘</kbd><kbd>R</kbd>): takes the place of each selected layer and removes it. Handy to swap a placeholder for the real thing.

What you paste is selected and brought into view, so you can see where it went.

## Duplicate

<kbd>⌘</kbd><kbd>D</kbd> duplicates the selection in place, just above the original in the layers list. A frame on the canvas is duplicated to its right, in the first free spot, so the copy does not sit on top of it.

Hold <kbd>⌥</kbd> and drag a layer to drag a copy away, leaving the original where it was.

Copies are numbered: "Card 2" duplicates as "Card 3", and a name with no number starts a series ("Icon" copies as "Icon 1"), so copies are easy to tell apart.

## Copy as

Right-click a layer and open **Copy as…** for:

- **PNG** (<kbd>⇧</kbd><kbd>⌘</kbd><kbd>C</kbd>): a picture at 2×, ready to paste into a chat or a document.
- **CSS**: the CSS for one layer.
- **SVG**: the selection as SVG markup.
- **HTML + CSS** and **Tailwind**: the selection as code. These are on Pro.

**Copy link** (<kbd>⌘</kbd><kbd>L</kbd>) copies a link that opens the file on that layer.

## Copy and paste styles

<kbd>⌥</kbd><kbd>⌘</kbd><kbd>C</kbd> (**Copy styles**) copies one layer's fill, stroke, radius, effects, blend mode and type settings. Select one or more layers and press <kbd>⌥</kbd><kbd>⌘</kbd><kbd>V</kbd> (**Paste styles**) to apply them.

To copy just a fill, click in the space left of its swatch in the **Fill** section to pick it, then press <kbd>⌘</kbd><kbd>C</kbd>. Pick a fill on another layer and press <kbd>⌘</kbd><kbd>V</kbd> to replace it. A colour code such as `#3366FF` on the clipboard pastes the same way.

## Paste from outside uxdeck

- **Pictures** copied from a browser or your computer paste as image layers. See [Images and video](/guide/images-video).
- **SVG** copied from another tool pastes as editable vector layers in a frame. Several SVG files pasted together line up side by side.
- **Plain text** pastes as a new text layer.
- A picture pasted while an empty picture placeholder is selected fills that placeholder, at its size and in its place.

Layers copied inside Figma cannot be pasted into uxdeck. To bring a whole design across, use [Import a Figma file](/guide/import-figma) instead.

## Catches

- **A copy made in one browser may not carry its pictures to another.** Very large pictures may not fit on the clipboard; a layer whose picture did not come across says so, and you can add it again.
- **Variables and styles stay behind.** A copy carries the layers and their pictures, not the variables or the text and effect styles they follow: in another file, apply them again.
- **Fonts this browser cannot draw** are named in a toast after a paste and shown in a stand-in until you add them. See [Your own fonts](/guide/fonts).
- **Cut skips locked layers.** Unlock them first if you want them to move.
