# Flows

> Mark where a journey starts, name it, and play or share each path through your prototype on its own.

A flow is a starting point for your prototype: sign up, checkout, onboarding. One page can hold several, each starting on its own screen. Preview starts where the right flow starts, lists every flow so you can switch between them, and each flow has a link you can send to someone who should see only that journey.

Use flows as soon as a page holds more than one path. Without them, Preview simply starts on the frame you have selected.

## Add a flow

1. Open the **Prototype** tab and select the screen the journey starts on (a top-level frame, or a frame in a section).
2. In the **Flow** section, press **+** (**Add a flow starting point**).

The flow is named Flow 1, Flow 2 and so on, and a flag marks its frame on the canvas. A toast confirms it, for example "Flow 1 starts on Welcome".

## Name and describe it

In the **Flow** section:

- **Flow name:** what the journey is, such as "Sign up".
- **Add a description:** a sentence on what to look for, for the people you share it with.

The note under them says how many links from other frames land on this screen, so you can tell a screen nobody reaches yet.

## See all your flows

With nothing selected, the Prototype tab lists the page's **Flows**. For each one you can:

- **Select frame:** jump to the screen it starts on.
- **Copy link:** a link to play this flow.
- **Present:** play it now.

Double-click a flow's name, or press <kbd>Enter</kbd> on it, to rename it.

## Play a flow

- With flows on the page, <kbd>⌥</kbd><kbd>⌘</kbd><kbd>↩</kbd> and the top bar's **Preview** start where the flow of the selected screen starts, or where the page's first flow starts.
- In Preview, press **Flows** at the left of the bar to see them all and start another.
- **Restart** (or <kbd>R</kbd>) goes back to where the playing flow starts, with nothing remembered.

On a phone, the prototype's menu (a two-finger press and hold) lists the flows too. See [Present in a device](/guide/present).

## Remove a flow

Select its screen and press the minus in the **Flow** section. uxdeck asks before it removes it. The screens and links stay as they are; only the starting point goes.

## Leave screens out of the prototype

A style guide, wireframes or an archive kept on the same page should not play. Put them in a section, select it, and turn off **Part of the prototype** in its Layout. Its frames are then left out of Preview, flows and publishing.

## Catches

- **A section cannot start a flow.** Select a frame inside it.
- **A flow follows the links.** A screen no link reaches is not part of that flow, even if it sits next to it; Preview's arrow keys still step to it.
- **Delete the starting frame** and its flow disappears from the list.

Flows are on every plan.
