# Install uxdeck as an app

> Put uxdeck in its own window, on your Dock, taskbar or Home Screen, so it opens like any other app.

uxdeck runs in the browser, but you can install it so it opens in a window of its own, without the browser's tabs and address bar around it. It gets an icon in your Dock, taskbar, Start menu or Home Screen, and it is the same uxdeck: your files, your account, the same updates.

Installing is optional. It is worth it if you use uxdeck every day, if you want to double-click a `.uxd` file to open it, or if you want notifications on an iPhone.

## On a computer

In Chrome or Edge:

1. Open uxdeck.
2. Open the **Deck** menu at the top left of a file, or your account menu, and choose **Install as an app**.
3. Confirm in the browser's dialog.

A toast says **Installed. It opens in its own window from now on.**

**Install as an app** only appears when the browser says installing is possible. If it is missing, you may already have installed uxdeck, or you are in a browser that does not offer it. Chrome and Edge also show an install button in the address bar.

## On a phone or tablet

- **iPhone and iPad:** in Safari, press **Share**, then **Add to Home Screen**.
- **Android:** in Chrome, open the browser's menu and choose to install the app or add it to the Home screen.

On an iPhone or iPad, installing is also what makes notifications possible: add uxdeck to your Home Screen first, open it from there, then turn notifications on in Settings. Read [Notifications](/guide/notifications) and [uxdeck on your phone](/guide/phone).

## What changes once installed

- **Its own window.** uxdeck opens without the browser's bar, and your file tabs are the only tabs.
- **Open .uxd files from your computer.** Double-click a `.uxd` file and it opens in uxdeck as a new file. Read [.uxd files and uploads](/guide/uxd-files).
Nothing else changes: your files stay in your account, and the browser version keeps working alongside the app. In the app as in the browser, when a new version of uxdeck is ready, a card says **Update available**. Press **Restart to update**, or **Not now** to carry on and update later.

## Remove it

Uninstall it the way your system removes apps: in Chrome or Edge, open the app's own menu (the three dots in its title bar) and choose to uninstall; on a phone, press and hold the icon and remove it. Your files are not touched, since they live in your account.

## Catches

- **Safari on a Mac and Firefox** do not offer **Install as an app** in uxdeck's menu. Use Chrome or Edge to install it on a computer.
- **The menu item is only offered once.** If you dismiss the browser's dialog, **Install as an app** may not come back until the browser offers it again. Use the install button in the address bar instead.
