# Seats and editors

> Understand when making someone an editor takes one of your seats, how many you have, and how to give a seat back.

On Pro, a seat is what lets someone edit your files. Anyone can view and comment for free, but when you make someone an editor of your files and they are not on Pro themselves, they take one of your seats. You count as one seat yourself.

If you are on Free, people you make editors of your files do not take seats.

## When a seat is taken

A seat is taken when you, on Pro, make someone who is not on Pro an editor:

- by setting them to **Editor** in **Invite**;
- by pressing **Allow editing** when they ask.

uxdeck asks first, with **Add a seat for {name}?**, and says how many seats you have left. Press **Add a seat** to go ahead.

Someone who is on Pro pays their own way: making them an editor takes no seat.

## Seats in a team

In a team, the role is the seat: the owner, admins and editors each hold one, viewers none. Making someone an editor in a team asks **Make {name} an editor in the team?**, and only the team's owner or an admin can do it. They can then edit every file in the team.

## How many seats

You have up to **10 seats**, yourself included. They are shared between your own files and all the teams you own, and each person counts once however many files or teams they edit.

When every seat is taken, uxdeck says so: give one back, or let the person view and comment instead.

## See and give back seats

**Settings**, **Seats** shows how many seats are in use, for example **3 of 10**, and lists the people on your seats with the date they started editing your files.

To free a seat, press **Give back** beside a person. uxdeck asks first. From their next visit they view and comment on your personal files. You can make them an editor again later.

A team's editors are listed in that team's **Members**, not here.

## Catches

- **Viewers are always free, and they can comment.** There is no limit on them.
- **The seat belongs to the person, not the file.** One seat covers them on every personal file you make them an editor of.
- **Giving a seat back does not remove the person.** They keep viewing and commenting.
- **Transferring a file** to someone else moves it to their plan, and their seats.
