# Version history

> Go back to an earlier state of a file, name the moments that matter, and restore a version or a copy of it.

uxdeck keeps snapshots of your file as you work, so you can look back at any of them and bring one back. You can also save a version yourself, with a name, before a big change or when a design is signed off. Versions are kept in your account with the file, and everyone in the file shares the same history.

Undo (<kbd>⌘</kbd><kbd>Z</kbd>) is for the last few changes. Version history is for going back hours or days.

## Snapshots and named versions

- **Autosave versions:** a snapshot is taken every ten minutes while someone works in the file. Between two named versions, they fold into one row, **N autosave versions**, that opens on a click.
- **Named versions:** saved when you choose to, with a name, the person who saved it and when.

## Save a version

1. Open the file menu under the file's name, and choose **Save a version…**.
2. Type a name, such as "Before the new header" or "Sent to the client".
3. Press <kbd>↩</kbd>. A toast says **Version “…” saved**.

A named version is saved even if nothing has changed; autosaves skip a file nobody touched.

## Open the history

Choose **Version history…** in the file menu, **Show version history** in a file's menu on Home, or **Open history** in [Deck settings](/guide/deck-settings). The history takes the place of the right panel, newest first. Press **Show older** to reach further back.

Hover a version, or click it to keep it open, and a card shows that version's page beside the list. The canvas stays as the file is now, so you can compare "now" and "then".

## Restore

On a version's card:

- **Restore** turns the file into that version. It asks first: "Your file becomes this version. Undo brings back what you have now." Everyone in the file sees the change. A toast offers **Undo** straight away.
- **Restore as a copy** makes a new file from that version, on Home, and leaves this one as it is. Use it to rescue one screen without losing today's work.

## Name, rename or delete

On a version's card, press **Name** to give it a name, or **Rename** to change one. Press **Delete** to remove it; it asks first, since a deleted version is gone for good, for everyone in the file. Your deck itself is not touched.

## Who can do what

| Action | Owner | Editor | Viewer |
|---|---|---|---|
| See the history | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Save, name and restore | Yes | Yes | No |
| Restore as a copy | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Delete a version | Yes | Only ones they saved | No |

## What each plan allows

Autosave versions are kept for **30 days** on Free and **90 days** on Pro, under the file owner's plan. In a team, they are kept for as long as the file exists. Named versions stay until someone deletes them, up to 200 per file. Read [Free and Pro](/guide/plans).

## Catches

- **Restoring is one step of undo.** If you restore the wrong version, press <kbd>⌘</kbd><kbd>Z</kbd> and you are back where you were.
- **200 named versions per file.** At that point, saving another asks you to delete one first.
- **Versions use storage.** A snapshot counts against the storage of whoever saved it, like a picture. If your storage is full, uxdeck asks you to delete versions or pictures, or upgrade, before saving another.
- **You need a connection.** The history is kept in your account, so it cannot be opened offline.
